Wyndford Estate Environmental Improvement Works

Client: Cube Housing Association

Sector: Housing Associations

Project value: £2.6M

Location: Maryhill, Glasgow

Timeframe: 2016 - 2018

Background:

This project formed part of Mackenzie Construction’s framework with The Wheatley Group, delivering External Environmental Improvement Schemes across their housing stock. The Wyndford Estate, located in the heart of Maryhill and historically known as “The Barracks” due to its origins on the site of the former Highland Light Infantry Army barracks, was selected for a major transformation.

In alignment with Cube Housing Association’s five-year strategy, Investing in Our Futures, the estate underwent significant external upgrades. Through their Here to Help campaign, Cube engaged with residents to gather feedback and shape the improvements based on community needs.

Scope of works:

Under the Wheatley Framework, Mackenzie Construction undertook a comprehensive refurbishment of the open spaces surrounding residential properties. Key elements included:

Tree management
Removal of overgrown or unsafe trees, followed by replanting to enhance biodiversity and aesthetics.

Soft landscaping
Extensive improvements to green spaces, including new planting schemes and turfing.

Site clearance
Removal of deteriorated surfacing and debris to prepare for new installations.

Pathway and public space upgrades
Demolition of dilapidated paths and reconfiguration of open areas with new charcoal monoblock paving, steps, and pedestrian routes.

Play and communal areas
Installation of informal play zones and shared spaces to encourage community interaction.

Lighting enhancements
Upgrades to street lighting for improved safety and ambience.

Garden and entrance improvements
Enhancements to private gardens and entrance routes, contributing to a more welcoming environment.

Community safety and coordination:

A key priority throughout the project was ensuring the safety of residents and the public. Works were carefully phased and segregated to maintain safe access at all times. Coordination with Glasgow City Council’s Refuse Collection Services ensured uninterrupted waste collection during construction.

Impact:

The transformation of the Wyndford Estate significantly improved the quality of the external environment, creating a more attractive, functional, and community-friendly space. The project reflects Mackenzie Construction’s commitment to delivering high-quality improvements while working collaboratively with clients and residents.
